Don’t Drink and Drive: A Family Film

Award winner

Overview

Jessica is the director of a charity called Survivors of Drunk Drivers, but she secretly battles alcoholism herself. After receiving a large donation, Jessica goes on a bender to celebrate with her manager. That night, drunk behind the wheel, she strikes a homeless man named Tom with her car.
Fearing the donation will be rescinded if her drunk driving is exposed, Jessica makes the split-second decision to take Tom home and nurse him back to health herself. As Tom recovers consciousness, Jessica invites him to stay as she goes to get ready for the Gala where her donation will be presented.
Tom wanders around her home and finds an old photo with a necklace draped over the edge. Jessica returns to the room and is horrified to find Tom holding the treasured necklace. Tom then shockingly reveals he’s been stalking her – he is her estranged father who caused the death of her mother years ago.
In a heated confrontation, Tom produces the matching necklace piece before a devastated Jessica loses consciousness. She awakes with a start, still in her car on the roadside – suggesting it was all a dream. But as police arrive to arrest her, the two necklaces tumble from her hand, leaving the audience to ponder if this eerie reunion with her father was real.
This psychologically gripping short film explores the dangers of alcoholism and drunk driving through the disquieting lens of Jessica’s possibly imagined or premonition-fueled encounter with her long-lost father. Viewers are left to question the blurring line between fantasy and reality.
